I would say that an extra tool against the scourge that is malaria is always a helpful one, and to know that LED bulbs might play a role in helping prevent the spread of deadly diseases like malaria is definitely an idea which is worth exploring. Do bear in mind that malaria happens to be one of the major causes of death in Africa and other areas, where 655,000 people die each year from the virus which is borne by mosquitoes.
It seems that LED bulbs which emit less ultraviolet and blue wavelengths of light, will in turn attract far less insects as opposed to those that emit the more traditionally blue-toned light.
Lead author Travis Longcore, a professor at the University of California, shared, “The research provides proof in concept that LED lamps can be customized to avoid specific areas of the spectrum that could have adverse environmental consequences, while still providing light for indoor use. For places in the world where glass windows and screens are uncommon, reducing insect attraction to indoor lights is a big deal.”
