As General Motors gears up to launch its Maven car sharing service in Ann Arbor, local rival Zipcar is sending out a response. The company has introduced a new program though which you can keep a car for as long as you want. This offers users more flexbility as opposed to the strict reservation schedule that was previously offered. You can also switch drop-off locations and destinations on the go now.

Zipcar announced today that it’s launching a new “flexible service” program which enables users to indefinitely extend their use of the car. Previously users had to drop off the car at a predetermined time and if they didn’t they had to pay a charge.

Zipcar is a car-sharing service that allows users to request the use of a car through a mobile app for under $10 per hour. It’s an economical option for those who don’t own a car since the hourly rate includes gas and insurance.

The company has confirmed these features and says that they will be available on all of its 150 cars in Michigan by the end of this year.

“We can’t sit still and have one model of service and expect to maintain our global leadership position,” Zipcar President Kaye Ceille told The Detroit News.
