AT&T Subscribers Can Stream DirecTV Without Worrying About Mobile Data

AT&T is the second largest mobile carrier in the United States and it does a lot more than just offer cellular service. Not too long ago, AT&T acquired DirecTV, which instantly boosted its existing position in the TV market. It’s now providing an incentive to AT&T subscribers who may or may not subscribe to DirecTV. They can stream TV using AT&T’s TV service without having to worry about it counting against their monthly mobile data allotment.

What this means is that the DirecTV app has effectively been zero-rated on AT&T, zero-rating is when the carrier doesn’t count data used by a particular app.

The DirecTV mobile app has been updated today to reflect this change. The release notes mention that users can now “stream DirecTV on your devices, anywhere — without using your data,” this is pretty self-explanatory.

As always, some restrictions do appear to be present. DirecTV says that under some circumstances, which are yet to be detailed, streaming TV on cellular data may count against the allotment. It has also been made clear that free streaming is subject to “network management, including speed reduction.”

It’s likely that we’ll hear more about this collaboration between AT&T and DirecTV later today as AT&T CEO Glenn Lurie will be giving a speech at CTIA, a telecommunications expo.
