Nearly 9 Out Of 10 Smartphones Are Powered By Android

android nougatIt is already pretty well-established that Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems are the two most popular operating systems in the world. However it seems that when compared next to each other, Android is the clear winner, at least according to the numbers provided by Strategy Analytics.

According to the firm, they have estimated that 87.5% of the global smartphone market share is controlled by Google’s Android platform. What this means is that nearly 9 out of 10 smartphones that you see out there today is probably an Android-powered device. The number of Android shipments are also up 10.3% year-over-year at 328.6 million.

Apple’s shipment of iPhones is down by 5.2% at 45.5 million versus the same period last year where it was at 48 million. This is more or less in line with what Apple had reported themselves in which they said that iPhone sales have declined for the third quarter in a row. To be fair, Apple’s iPhone is but one device.

This is versus Android in which there are a plethora of vendors to choose from, ranging from obscure but extremely affordable smartphones, to the very high-end models with the latest technology from the likes of well-known brands like Samsung, LG, HTC, and even Google themselves. That being said, we expect the divide to keep getting bigger, unless for some reason Google decides to keep Android all to themselves.
