New BlackBerry phones arriving on Sprint August 21st

Want to know how much you’ll be forking out if you plan to get the one of the next generation BlackBerry devices? Thanks to the folks at BGR who managed to get their hands on an upcoming Sprint flier, we now have the prices for the phones when they go on sale later this year.

The BlackBerry Bold 9930 will be priced at $249.99, while the BlackBerry Torch 9850 will be $149.99 – both with a 2-year contract on Sprint. While $150 for the Torch seems nice, paying an additional hundred for the Bold seems pretty steep, even though it is RIM’s flagship device after all. But a price drop in the coming months is speculated, so if you can afford to wait, it’s probably a good idea.

We are also given a release date for the new devices – August 21^st will be the date to watch out for. Expect details from other carriers to arrive in the coming weeks. Anybody making these phones a day one purchase when they launch on Sprint?

RIM: RIM is the acronym for Research In Motion, the Canadian company behind the BlackBerry brand. RIM was founded in the mid 90s by Mike Lazaridis and with Jim Balsillie and went IPO (Initial Public Offering) in 1998. Its claim to fame was to make mobile email really effective and enterprises quickly adopted its devices and associated software and services which were highly lucrative. With the rise of iOS and Android devices, the BlackBerry franchise bumped into trouble and its decline prompted RIM to take a radical step by overhauling its BlackBerry operating system (OS) completely with QNX. The first version of the QNX BlackBerry OS is BlackBerry 10 or BB10.

Sprint: Sprint is one of the major wireless carriers in the USA. It uses a mix of CDMA, WiMax and LTE Networks as the backbone of its infrastructure. The company's network is also used by third parties and mobile virtual operators like Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and Assurance Wireless. Sprint has about 55M subscribers.
