Back in the day when physical keyboards and number pads were commonplace on phones, it was actually possible to send text messages to people without having to look at what you’re pressing, especially if you’re familiar with your phone and how it predicts and completes your words for you.

These days doing that on a touchscreen is quite difficult, but what if you were familiar with Morse code? Thanks to Patryk Laurent, a cognitive scientist who is working at the Brain Corporation in San Diego, he has cooked up an Apple Watch app that allows users to send messages in Morse code.

Speaking to Cult of Mac, Laurent said, “The idea of tapping out messages in Morse code came pretty naturally when thinking about ways to communicate subtly using the touch interface. This way, I would be able to send or reply to text messages without having to use dictation — especially useful if [I’m] in a meeting or a seminar.”

Of course you will need to know Morse code in order to make full use of the app, but if you do then we can imagine how nifty this app will be, especially as Laurent points out, makes it easier to reply messages when you’re in meetings or at events where pulling out your phone might be too obvious. While the app does not appear to be available for download, you can check out the video above, courtesy of Cult of Mac, which shows the app in action.
