sony playstation vrYesterday Sony officially confirmed the launch date and price of the PlayStation VR. It has been set for an October, 2016 launch and will be priced at $400, significantly cheaper than the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality headsets. No doubt Sony is undercutting both companies, but as it turns out Oculus VR’s founder Palmer Luckey has no qualms about it.

Speaking to the folks at GameSpot in an interview at GDC, Luckey seemed to be pretty fine with Sony’s pricing, going as far as calling it a fair price. According to Luckey, “They are cheaper, but I think it’s a totally fair price and they’ve definitely done a good job of keeping the cost down. Clearly that was a priority.”

However he also notes that this is because the PlayStation VR is being sold as just the headset alone, versus the Oculus Rift in which the company will bundle other accessories. “We also have multiple LED displays instead of just one display. But [the Oculus Rift] at $599 is actually not that far off. We’re selling $599 with a controller, and with the remote, and with a couple of games.”

We should note that both the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR are designed for different platforms, with the former aimed at PC gamers, while the latter is aimed at console gamers, so at the end of the day we suppose it’s up to you to decide if you just want the headset for pure gaming, or if you wouldn’t mind experiencing other things in virtual reality as well.
