Tesla is one of the best-known manufacturers of all-electric cars right now. It has already unveiled its $35,000 mass-market Model 3 electric car and that appears to have conventional car makers worried. We’re now seeing companies like Mercedes-Benz and others heavily shift their focus towards electric cars, and a new report out of Germany suggests that BMW is going to do the same.

German business daily Handelsblatt hears from sources that BMW is planning a major restructuring of its executive board which will coincide with a major shift in its electric car strategy to better compete against Tesla. We’ve already seen the company take a swing at Tesla in one of the advertisements for its new car.

BMW is reportedly going to offer full electric versions of its 3 series as well as the X4 SUV aside from the fully electric i3 models which have been in production since 2013.

This would be the first time that BMW launches an all-electric version of one of its proper sedans like those that make up the 3 series, so this is going to be a move that will be closely watched by the industry.

BMW prides itself on building the ultimate driving machines, purists tend to prefer its cars when it comes down to sheer driving pleasure, so they will certainly be interested in finding out whether BMW will be able to retain that quality in the 3 series when it makes it fully electric.
