With the massive success that Niantic experienced with Pokemon GO, it basically opened up the door for more augmented reality (AR) games as it proved that the technology could be used successfully for gaming, especially when paired with extremely popular franchises. Now it looks like Sony wants in on the action as well.

The company has recently announced that together with Ghost Corps, they are working on a Ghostbusters game that will be released on iOS and Android devices in the future. According to the description, “Ghostbusters World gameplay will enable players to battle and capture hundreds of ghosts from all dimensions of the franchise, including the films, TV shows, comic books, theme parks, and video games. The game will also feature new and unique ghosts to the franchise.”

Details about the gameplay and features are scarce, but the teaser trailer above seems to suggest that we can look forward to similar gameplay to that of Pokemon GO, where players might have to go out into the real world to “catch” ghosts using their mobile phones. In addition to some of the classic ghosts/creatures from the franchise, the game is also expected to introduce new and unique creatures to the Ghostbusters universe as well.

It has been suggested that Sony’s announcement could be related to Google’s upcoming announcement of ARCore which will be taking place at MWC 2018 next week, so hopefully we will have more details to share then.
