At long last, after numerous leaks of training manuals and guides alongside images, is the Motorola Droid 2 announced officially over Verizon. It is available for pre-sale from tomorrow onwards, delivering the latest Android 2.2 operating system as well to place it on par with the Google Nexus One in terms of software updates. Of course, the vanilla Droid 2 isn’t the only one to be revealed, as the R2-D2 version has also been announced to pay homage to the iconic Astromech Droid from the Star Wars saga. This limited edition version will only be available online from September onwards, where it will ship with exclusive Star Wars content and external hardware that was specially designed to look like the droid from the film saga. You can pick up the Droid 2 for $199.99 as reported after a $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract from Verizon Wireless Communications Stores from August 12th onwards. If you want to enhance that with an optional 3G Mobile HotSpot service, then it will cost another $20 monthly, letting you share your Internet connection with another five compatible Wi-Fi devices.
