Olympus Phasing Out Entry-Level DSLRs for Micro Four-Thirds

Olympus is looking to phase out its aging entry level DSLR cameras in favor of the newer and emerging, but smaller sized, Micro Four-Thirds format. The newer format employed by the company’s PEN line of digital cameras, is made smaller than taditional SLR cameras because it doesn’t need the same mirror-based architecture.

Olumpus SLR Product Manager Toshiyuki Terada said in an interview that the company had no definitive plans at the moment to replace its aging DSLR cameras in the entry-level segment, and that the company could be moving to the new Micro Four-Thirds format. That format thus far has been a niche product, and Olympus’s move could bring the format mainstream. Those wanting a traditional SLR will have to move to a professional or prosumer camera in Olympus’s lineup.
