Crysis 2 developers want at least 8GB of RAM in next-gen consoles

Even if you don’t play PC games, you’ll probably still know what “But does it run Crysis?” (Cheat sheet: it means “Is your PC’s CPU and GPU powerful enough?”) Digital Foundry’s new Crysis 2 is just as beefy as Crysis was on PC. The only thing that’s changed this time around is that the visually stunning game is no longer a PC-exclusive – it’s also available on Xbox 360 and PS3. While, powerful as those video game consoles are, they’re no match for a $3,000+ gaming PC with overclocked quad-core processors and tons of RAM. DF’s principal graphics engineer Tiago Sousa says, “My finger-pointing at Microsoft/Sony would really be on the memory side,” he said. “It’s way too low, and the biggest crippling factor from a visual perspective. I would really like to see next-gen console platforms with a minimum of 8GB.” The Xbox 360 has 512MB of RAM, whereas the PS3 has only 256MB. In my opinion, a leap to 8GB would increase the price of a console from “affordable” to “just for enthusiasts.” Interestingly, Sousa also says neither console versions run in “true 720p” HD – Crysis 2 on Xbox 360 only runs at 1152 x 720 resolution.
