Samsung Galaxy S II launched in South Korea first, the world will have to wait

Samsung Electronics has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, is now the second largest handset manufacturer in the world. Having rolled out the sequel to its flagship Galaxy S smartphone in South Korea, the rest of the world will have to wait until a May release. So far, Samsung executives have targeted a global sales figure of more than 10 million this year – nothing close to what the iPhone has achieved so far, but when you think about it in terms of Android handsets, that is still quite the achievement if it were to be realized.

This local debut of the Galaxy S II happens in the midst of a legal battle with Cupertino concerning alleged mobile technology patent infringements as well as design copy claims, as both consumer electronics juggernauts start slugging it out to gain a larger share in the highly competitive smartphone market.

The Samsung Galaxy S II will be released globally from May through 140 operators in 120 different countries, and Samsung will also forsee a 500% increase in the sales of its Galaxy Tab tablets – pretty optimistic figures if you ask us. Samsung hopes that the use of their own dual-core processor in the Galaxy S II will be able to help trim costs even as volume increases, and this might just lead to better handsets and processors within down the road as well at a cheaper price.
