Sharp crams 20.2 megapixels into a 1/2.3″ CCD image sensor
Most seasoned and pro photographers are probably aware that megapixels aren’t everything. In fact they’re mostly used as marketing fluff for the layman who ends up shooting photos that just go up on the web to sites such as Facebook or Flickr. Unless of course you’re in the business of printing out huge banners and billboards, that’s probably where the importance of megapixels kick in. In any case, it seems like Sharp has managed to come up with a 1/2.3” CCD with a whopping 20.2 megapixels crammed into it. While it certainly gives way to smaller digital cameras with larger megapixels, it would also mean a lot more noisier images as a result. No word on what Sharp plans to do with this just yet, but we guess kudos to them on fitting that many megapixels into a CCD of that size.
