Picasso 3D Film will give your iPhone glasses-free 3D capabilities

Ever wondered what it might be like if the iPhone had glasses-free 3D capabilities like the HTC EVO 3D or the LG Optimus 3D Max? Now before you guys get the wrong idea, no there are no rumors suggesting a 3D capable iPhone, but rather a 3D film by Nippon System Project dubbed the “Picasso 3D Film”. It looks like a regular screen protector which is used for protecting your display against scratches, but the main difference is that it does one thing more – it will turn your iPhone’s 2D display into a 3D one!

Much the display on the Nintendo 3DS, the Picasso 3D Film utilizes parallax barrier technology and even comes with a free app that lets you capture and make 3D photos of your own. Now to be honest since we have yet to try it out for ourselves, we can’t really speak for its effectiveness or practicality although we’ll admit that it does sound like a pretty novel idea. So how much will this 3D film cost you? Well it is noticeably more expensive than your typical screen protector, but if you can justify the price tag of ¥3,990 (~US$50.58), then you could be in for a treat.

Now the good news is that the film will not be limited to just the iPhone. It seems that films for the Samsung Galaxy S2, the PlayStation Vita, the MacBook Air, the iMac and the Panasonic Let’s Note laptop are currently in the works. However we’re guessing that since these devices utilize larger displays, the cost of the film should see an increase as well. No word as to whether it will be made available stateside, but what do you guys think? Would you be willing to drop $50 for 3D capabilities?
