Portable Water Filter Powered By Nanomaterials

nanoparticlewaterfilterResearchers over at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras have been working on a simple point-of-use water filtration technology, where results have shown that it has proved to be effective in rolling out drinking water without burning a hole in your pocket, where it relies on nanomaterials to get the filtering shot done, cleaning the water along the way. This new device has yet to undergo the production process, but when complete, it will depend on a 2-stage process to purify the water. The first step would be to remove biological contaminants including bacteria and viruses, where silver nanoparticles will then get to work by removing chemical and heavy metal pollutants.

The filtration system has also been touted to be able to remove lead, arsenic, as well as other hazards from water, where it costs a mere $2.50 annually for the entire family. Now that is definitely cheap, don’t you think so? It seems that the main obstacle to this idea would be to develop a system which can actually release silver ions non-stop to participate in the purification process sans the help of electricity. At the end of the day, this device is said to be able to produce potable water which is safe for drinking, at a rate of up to 10 liters per hour. Let’s hope this happens sooner rather than later.
