Garmin is no stranger to offering an Android device as its attempted to dip into the Android market back in 2010 when it released its Garminfone. Since then, we haven’t heard much from the company in regards to new Android devices, but today Garmin is announcing a handheld GPS which will run a version of Android called Monterra.

Seeing how it’s a dedicated handheld GPS, don’t expect its specs to blow you away as it’ll feature a 4-inch touchscreen, 8MP camera with flash and geotag support, 1080p video capture capabilities and 6GB of internal storage with support for microSD. The Monterra will include Wi-Fi support, ANT+, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, a built-in FM radio with NOAA weather and SAME alerts, a UV sensor, 3-axis compass with accelerometer and gyroscope and will run on a rechargeable battery pack or AA batteries.

The Moterra has a number of neat features that make outdoor use possible as it’ll feature a display that has been optimized to be used outdoors thanks to its transflective display. Not only will it be easy to view outdoors, but you’ll also be able to conserve battery power as it’ll only need to use its LED backlight when low-light conditions are present.

The Garmin Monterra is expected to ship in Q3 and will retail for around $650.
