Samsung had confirmed last week that it would be announcing its new Exynos 5 Octa processor. The devices that Samsung sells in the U.S. usually have Qualcomm processors, but in various other regions, those same devices are powered by the company’s own processor. The Exynos 5 Octa 5410 debuted with the Galaxy S4 earlier this year, Samsung has now announced its successor that offers double the graphics performance, its called Exynos 5 Octa 5420.

The word “octa” means that this processor has eight cores, it leverages ARM’s big.LITTLE design to run four 1.8GHz ARM Cortex A15 cores and four 1.3GHz ARM Cortex A7 cores. This combination of cores provides better performance as well as lower battery drain. Samsung claims that Exynos 5 Octa 5420 has 20 percent more processing power than its predecessor, however the major difference lies in graphics processing. It has a six core Mali T628 MP6 GPU that offers twice the graphic processing power of the previous Exynos processor. Samsung is delivering the new processor to vendors, so it will take some time before devices based on it hit the market. The production is said to be increased in August, rumor has it that Galaxy Note 3 might tout the Exynos 5 Octa 5420.
