AT&T Eyes European Carriers For Future Acquisitions

It wasn’t too long ago that AT&T’s attempt acquire T-Mobile had fallen through, resulting in both companies who seemed pretty close at that time, to become even bigger rivals than before. In any case it seems that AT&T is now looking beyond the US for future carrier acquisitions, and according to the reports, AT&T is now eyeing the European region for potential acquisitions in the future. Speaking at an investor conference in New York, AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson revealed that it was Verizon’s buyout of Vodafone’s 45%  stake in the company that really opened his eyes to the potential and possibility of acquiring carriers in Europe.

“We have pretty much written off that any kind of large-scale deal in our sector is going to get done … going from four players to three is kind of a threshold issue.” While this is a good idea on AT&T’s part, there are of course many obstacles in the way, such as market differences, along with the government policies in the US and Europe that could make it harder for AT&T to make a move. In any case there are no carriers that AT&T might be interested in at the moment, at least not mentioned publicly, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information nonetheless.
