Android Wear, Google’s platform for wearable devices, does not support iOS. Google hasn’t said that it will never support the rival OS, recent reports suggest that work on bringing support for Android Wear devices to iOS might already be underway. A developer, Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh, demonstrated last month how he got notifications from an iPhone working on his Android Wear smartwatch. He’s back with another video which shows phone calls being pushed to the smartwatch.
Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh posted a video today which shows an Android Wear smartwatch receive calls from an iPhone. To show that the feature works fully he picks up the call. The developer says that the simulated the gesture to answer a phone call on the smartwatch because he didn’t want to fill up the frame with his hand.
Abu-Garbeyyeh made use of existing native APIs in iOS to get this to work. There’s no official support as yet for Android Wear smartwatches in iOS so there’s no doubt that he had to get creative. This is precisely the same implementation we saw in his demonstration of notifications being pushed from the iPhone.
This is more of a proof of concept than an actual solution that you will be able to replicate between your iPhone and smartwatch. Do check out the video though and see what picking up calls on a smartwatch routed from an iPhone looks like.
