Samsung Develops 128GB Mobile Flash Storage For Mid-Range Devices

Mid-range smartphones usually don’t have the most amazing hardware specs or features, but unfortunately not everyone can afford a high-end smartphone. There are also times when an affordable mid-range handset might come in handy, such as for taking and storing photos used for work, or maybe to double up as an MP3 player.

Now if you have such a device, you might be interested to learn that perhaps in the future, you won’t have to turn to using microSD cards to expand your handset’s memory. Samsung has recently announced that they have developed 128GB mobile flash storage that is intended for mid-range devices. What this means is that should OEMs choose to, they can start including the storage in their mid-range devices and will no longer have to price it at a premium.

Depending on the OEM, a microSD card slot can also be included which means that you can expand that 128GB of default storage even more, although it remains to be seen which OEM will be taking advantage of Samsung’s new mobile flash storage chips. The new chips will be capable of 260MB/s for sequential data reading putting it on par with eMMC 5.1 memory.

Its random data read and write operations of 6,000 and 5,000 IOPs respectively are also possible and will make it much faster compared to microSD cards. Like we said it is unclear which OEM will be using these memory chips or if Samsung will be using it themselves, but it’ll be worth keeping an eye out for.
