I’m pretty sure you’ve read this headline before because every year the season finale of Game of Thrones tends to perform similarly with pirates. Unsurprisingly, yesterday’s Game of Thrones season 5 finale has broken all previous piracy records, it merits mentioning here that this series has already established its place as the most pirated TV show. The last episode of this season was downloaded via torrents more than 1.5 million times in just under eight hours.

It is expected that this number is going to surge all the way to 10 million in the coming days, it’s an impressive feat nonetheless to achieve 1.5 million downloads while it hasn’t even been a full day since the episode was aired on HBO.

TorrentFreak reports that this episode is also going to break the all-time record for the most number of people sharing a single file at a given time, the finale was already expected to be a record breaker, and clearly it didn’t disappoint.

This finale’s performance has been quite stellar, considering the fact that last year’s finale took almost 12 hours to reach the 1.5 million download figure. Data shows that among pirates the low quality 480p copies are the most popular, probably because they just can’t wait for the 720p or 1080p copies to download.

The piracy demand appears to be growing for this title amid reports that HBO has started warning pirates earlier this year that they had downloaded episodes illegally. Clearly those efforts have not perturbed pirates.
