Microsoft’s Windows-powered smartphones aren’t doing as well in the market as the company would want them to but it’s not giving up on them yet. It has released a couple of new handsets over the past year and is likely to come out with another in a few months. Lumia 640 has performed relatively well and to just give it a nudge Microsoft has decided to reduce the off-contract price of this handset.

Even though the Lumia 650 can now be purchased for just $49 off-contract the handset isn’t unlocked, it will remain locked to AT&T, but that’s a good enough price for this mid-range Windows-powered handset.

Microsoft usually sells the Lumia 640 for $59.99 but from today until February 15th it’s going to sell it for $49.99. That’s $10.99 off the regular price and it’s available straight away from the Microsoft Store.

This mid-range smartphone features a 5 inch IPS 720p display with a quadcore 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor coupled with 1GB RAM. There’s 8GB of onboard storage, an 8 megapixel rear camera with a 0.9 megapixel front camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 2,500mAh battery.

The units are shipping with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 but it has already been confirmed that the Lumia 640 is going to be among the first devices to receive Windows 10 Mobile when it’s released in a few months from now.
