Seagate has unveiled a production-ready unit of what it claims to be the “fastest-ever” SSD (solid-state drive), with throughput performance of 10 gigabytes per second. This production-ready unit is said to meet Open Compute Project specifications which makes it a good choice for hyper-scale data centers that want to more to the latest flash technology with support for the latest and most sustainable standards.

The company expects to release its 10GB/s performance touting solid state drives later this year in the summer. Seagate says it’s 4GB/s faster than the previous fastest-industry SSD available on the market.

Its new SSD is capable of working with any data center system that supports the Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) protocol, developed by a consortium of vendors which includes Seagate, to replace the legacy SATA standards and put an end to informational bottlenecks.

“Whether for consumer cloud or business applications, this SSD will help improve on demands for fast access to information, where split seconds drive incremental value gains,” said Brett Pemble, Seagate’s general manager and vice president of SSD Products.

Aside from the 16-lane PCIe slot featuring flagship SSD, Seagate is also in the process of finalizing a second unit of the 10GB/s SSD technology that features eight-lane PCIe slots, providing what it claims to be the fastest speeds in eight-lane card category at 6.7GB/s. Both 16 and eight-lane SSD units will be released to customers by summer 2016.
