Fan Run Vanilla World Of Warcraft Server Shut Down By Blizzard

World of WarcraftThere are probably many World of Warcraft veterans who have been playing since the game was first released and are lamenting about how the game is too easy these days, and how players are pretty much handed everything, versus back in the day where Warlocks had to undergo an epic questline just to be able to summon their mount.

This is why it isn’t surprising to learn that a group of fans have decided to create their own server in which the vanilla World of Warcraft is being hosted. The server has 800,000 registered gamers to date but unfortunately for them, it looks like Blizzard’s lawyers weren’t too thrilled about it and have since told them to shut it down.

Dubbed Nostalrius, the team has since agreed to comply with Blizzard’s demands but at the same time, will be releasing the source code so that someone else can take up the mantle should they choose to. “Today is also the day where Nostalrius will start being community-driven in the truest sense of the word, as we will be releasing the source code, and anonymized players data (encrypting personal account data), so the community as a whole will decide the form of the future of Nostalrius. We will still be there in the background if you want us to, but will no longer take the lead.”

Unsurprisingly many gamers were unhappy with the shutdown and a petition has since been launched to help keep the server alive. If you’re so inclined you can check it out and sign your name if you believe that the vanilla World of Warcraft is still in demand.
