Sony Will Not Be Charging Gamers For PS4 Pro Update Patches

ps4When Sony announced the PS4 Pro, they also revealed that they would not be leaving PS4 gamers behind as they will be issuing updates to the PS4 with HDR functionality. Granted it’s not exactly 4K gaming, but for gamers with no intention of upgrading, it should breathe some new life into the console.

The good news is that it looks like the rumors of Sony possibly charging for the patch is false. This is according to a report from Polygon who has confirmed with Sony that the company “will not charge consumers for patches.” A post on the NeoGAF forums by Absinthe Games founder Jack Sipich also confirmed that developers “are not allowed to charge you for patches or [PS4 Pro] feature updates.”

The original report came from Kotaku who cited Japanese website Game Impress Watch who interviewed Sony Interactive Entertainment exec Masayasu Ito, and where according to the translation Ito was quoted as saying, “It will be different for each title. I believe it will depend on the thinking of each licensee,” when asked about whether or not the HDR patch could cost money or be free.

We’re not sure if Ito misspoke or if something was lost in translation, but in any case regardless of what it was, PS4 gamers can rest assured that the HDR patch will be free, so it’s business as usual folks!
