Instagram today announced a couple of new features to combat abuse on the platform. It has already given users the ability to filter comments based on keywords. It was the first step in providing users more control over comments on their posts and it’s taking things up a notch by launching two new features to further improve this experience.

Instagram says that it will soon add a way to turn off comments on any posts. Users will be able to decide whether or not they want comments enabled on a particular post. This feature was previously limited to select accounts but soon it will be rolled out to all users.

Users will be able to turn off comments for any post by tapping “Advanced Settings” before they post and selecting “Turn Off Commenting.” They can tap the “…” menu to turn commenting back on at anytime they want.

The coming weeks will also bring the ability to like comments by tapping a heart icon next to them. It says this will show support and encourage positivity throughout the community.

Instagram users who have private accounts previously couldn’t remove a follower they had approved without blocking them. This will change soon as well. Private account users will be able to remove followers from their list. The person won’t be notified if they’re removed.

A new system for anonymous reporting of self-injury posts has been created. If users believe someone they care about is thinking about injuring themselves, they can report it anonymously to Instagram which will then connect the relevant user to organizations that offer help. It will have teams working to provide support 24 hours a day.
