New Year’s Eve can be busy in more ways than one. People go out to have a nice time so the restaurants and the clubs are almost always crowded. People also send a lot of messages to their friends and family wishing them health and happiness for the new year, they send quite a lot of messages, 63 billion of them just through WhatsApp.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, has revealed that its popular cross-platform messaging service was used to send 63 billion messages across the globe on New Year’s Eve. 14 billion of those messages were sent in India alone.

A spokesperson further revealed that 8 billion messages were accounted for by images while 2.5 billion WhatsApp messages contained videos so it’s not like people were just sharing texts over the service. Quite a lot of multimedia content flows through it as well, but it’s not like we didn’t already know that.

Facebook now owns two of the most widely used cross-platform messaging services on the platform. It announced last year in April that both Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp were used to send more than 60 billion messages combined every single day.

WhatsApp was the clear leader even back then as it was contributing some 42 billion messages to the total by February 2016. This goes to show that usage continues to increase and is likely to do so in the coming years.
