First IMAX VR Theater Opens In Los Angeles

IMAX is planning to open many virtual reality theaters and it has now opened its first in Los Angeles. These are going to be very different from the IMAX theaters that you might have witnessed. There won’t be any large, wraparound screens at this locations. They will actually feature comfortable chairs and powerful virtual reality headsets so that average people who just want to experience VR without spending too much money on acquiring all of the gadgets and gizmos can get in on the action as well.

The IMAX VR theater in Los Angeles offers a mix of Starbreeze StarVR and HTC Vive headsets. These headsets are placed inside 14 isolated pods that also feature a Dbox cinema chair, physical controllers, and a Subpac vest that’s capable of vibrating.

Visitors can buy VR experiences individually or experience a “sampler” if they really want to experience virtual reality in different ways. IMAX is offering a variety of VR games and movies which include titles like Eagle Flight, The Walk, and Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine. More content will be added in the coming months.

The company is planning to open more of these VR theaters in New York and California as well as overseas in the United Kingdom and China.
