WhatsApp Video Could Soon Get Picture-In-Picture Support

It wasn’t too long ago that WhatsApp launched the video calling feature for its platform. Given that there are a ton of other messenger apps that support video calling, we guess it’s only a matter of time before they introduced the feature, and now it looks like the feature could be getting a bit of an upgrade.

In a recent tweet by @WABetaInfo, it seems that in the latest beta for WhatsApp for Android, it looks like the video calling feature will be a picture-in-picture (PIP) mode. What this means is that users will be able to shrink the video calling window and move it around the display, thus allowing them to chat with others while maintaining the video call connection.

However according to the tweet, it seems that this particular feature is for Android and for Android 8.0. We’re not sure if by that they mean that it won’t be supported on older Android builds, or if it is only currently being tested on Android 8.0. There was also no mention of iOS, but we expect that if the Android version were to have it, the iOS version should be getting it too.

No word on when this feature will be exiting beta, but if you do rely on WhatsApp’s video calling feature, then this could be a convenient feature to look out for in the future.
