American Airlines Using CT Scanner To Screen Luggage At JFK

American Airlines has a new machine to screen your luggage at New York’s JFK airport. It’s working with the Transportation Security Administration to install this new bag-scanning machine at the airport. The machine uses the same technology that’s found in CT scanners. It thus provides a 3D image of the contents inside the bag. The new computed tomography or CT scanner will be installed at the Terminal 8 security checkpoint at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The technology is a step up from the existing two-dimensional X-ray machines used to scan luggage currently. That’s what’s used at most of the security checkpoints across the globe. Since CT technology is 3D, it thus has the potential to provide improved visibility and also enables the operator to rotate the bag’s image 360 degrees to view the contents of the bag at every angle.

The technology offers the operator the capability to see beyond unwanted clutter and also greatly improves the ability to visually inspect the contents of the bag for explosives and other prohibited items. This technology could provide passengers with the opportunity to leave liquids, gels, aerosols, and laptops in their carry-on bags at all times.

“This partnership will allow us to deploy new technology quickly and see an immediate improvement in security effectiveness,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. The new CT scanning machine will be operational at JFK later this month.
