Facial Recognition System For 2020 Tokyo Olympics Revealed

Expect to see a lot of modern technology being widely used if you pop down to Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. A self-driving car service is already being prepared for the major event and now the facial recognition system which will be used to ensure that everything runs smoothly has been revealed. NEC will provide this large-scale facial recognition system for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This facial recognition system is going to be used to identify more than 300,000 people attending the games. This includes the athletes, media personnel, volunteers, and other staff. Never before has facial recognition been used for this purpose at an Olympics event.

NeoFace is the artificial intelligence engine around which this facial recognition system has been built by NEC. It’s part of the company’s wide-ranging Bio-IDiom line of biometric authentication technology.

The implementation for the 2020 Olympics will link photo data with an IC card which will be carried by accredited people. The system will thus be able to recognize the accredited people through facial recognition, making it easier and faster for them to breeze in and out of event venues.

The system will address a specific challenge during the games. There’s no single Olympic park for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The events will be spread between multiple venues and stadiums so it’s important to have people moving freely and swiftly between each venue where they have to authenticate themselves.
