Google Has Reportedly Given Up On Tablets

There have been no new tablet products from Google this year and many might be wondering if the company plans on releasing any this year. According to a new report, that may not be the case anymore. Google has reportedly given up on making tablets altogether. Hardly surprising, given that the tablet market continues to see falling shipments and Google’s last attempt at establishing a foothold didn’t exactly succeed.

The company launched its Chrome OS-powered Pixel Slate last year but it didn’t do as well as Google might have hoped. It was later revealed that the division had been downsized which further limited chances of a new tablet product this year.

Computerworld hears that Google did have two smaller-sized tablets in the pipeline but earlier this week, it decided to end work on those devices. It will now be focusing its efforts entirely around laptops. It’s pertinent to note here that this change doesn’t affect Google’s Pixel smartphones.

Moreover, this doesn’t extend to a two-in-one convertible such as the Pixelbook. The report also carries a confirmation from a Google spokesperson. The news about Google moving away from tablets was announced at an internal company meeting yesterday. Employees who were working on these abandoned projects will now be shifted to other areas. Many of them have reported shifted over to the laptop side already.
