Google Stadia To Let Publishers Offer Their Own Subscriptions

Google recently detailed the pricing for its subscription-based game streaming service. Some additional information has now been revealed by the head of Stadia, Phil Harrison. He mentioned that the company will allow game publishers who distribute their games through Stadia to offer their own game subscriptions through the service.

Harrison revealed during YouTube 3’s E3 Live show in an interview with Geoff Keighley that he would expect publishers to start working on their subscription plans for games on Stadia “in relatively short order.” He added that Google will support this on the Stadia platform and that some announcements around this will be made in due course.

He didn’t specify which publishers will be going ahead with this, only pointing out that it will most likely be those publishers who have “bigger catalogs and more significant line-ups.” A publisher like Electronic Arts certainly comes to mind in that case. It already offers EA Access, a subscription-based service which allows members to download a selection of its games on the Xbox One for a monthly fee.

This service will soon be available on the PlayStation 4 as well, so why not Stadia? EA has already confirmed that it will be offering games through Stadia. It may be a while, though, before we get to hear more about these subscriptions for Stadia.
