Capital One Data Breach To Be Investigated By NY Attorney General’s Office

Capital One has confirmed a massive data breach which has impacted over 100 million people in the United States and Canada. It wasn’t likely that an investigation wouldn’t be launched into the breach. While the bank has carried out its own investigation, the New York Attorney General’s Office will be looking into this breach as well.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced that her office is going to investigate the Capital One data breach. This will be done to ensure that New Yorkers who were victims of this breach are provided relief,” according to James, who added that We cannot allow hacks of this nature to become every day occurrences.”

According to reports, this breach was allegedly the work of a former Amazon Web Services engineer. The leaked data includes phone numbers, emails, names, dates of birth, and self-reported incomes. The bank’s press release also mentioned that 140,000 U.S. Social Security numbers, 80,000 bank account numbers, and 1 million Canadian social insurance numbers were compromised as well.

Capital One has said that it immediately fixed the vulnerability which was exploited in this breach and that it’s working with federal law enforcement. The person responsible has been arrested by the FBI, it said. Capital One believes it is unlikely that the leaked information “was used for fraud or disseminated by this individual.”
