WhatsApp Now Available For KaiOS Feature Phones

Some of you might be aware that KaiOS, a web-based operating system for feature phones, has been heavily invested in by Google. It obviously doesn’t have that many apps and the absence of WhatsApp was felt by many. The cross-platform messaging service is used by billions of people across the globe but it wasn’t available for KaiOS, which meant that people who bought those feature phones couldn’t get it. That changes today.

WhatsApp is now available for download from the KaiOS app store. The app was actually available on the KaiOS-powered JioPhone in India so it was known that the app would eventually make its way to other devices as well. That’s what has happened today.

The KaiOS iteration of WhatsApp enables users to call and message other WhatsApp users so they can use the app’s core functionality just the way that they would use it on a smartphone. There’s even end-to-end encryption.

The app is compatible with KaiOS feature phones that have as little as 256MB of RAM. Do keep in mind, though, that it will only be available on KaiOS devices that are running a more recent iteration of the software which has the ability to download apps from the app store.
