iPhone 12 Mini Will Only Charge At 12W With MagSafe

One of the new features supported across Apple’s new iPhone 12s comes in the form of MagSafe, Apple’s take on wireless charging. When paired with Apple’s 20W charger, it will wirelessly charge iPhones at speeds as fast as 15W. However, that won’t be the case with the iPhone 12 mini.

According to a support document uploaded by Apple, they have revealed that the iPhone 12 mini when paired with MagSafe will only charge at speeds of 12W, making it 3W slower compared to the other iPhone 12s. We’re not sure how much slower this will be in actual charging time, but it should be noted that the iPhone 12 mini will have a smaller battery compared to the other iPhone 12 models, so there is a chance that despite its slightly slower charging speeds, it could still end up evening out.

While MagSafe is meant to be more convenient, there has been a bit of controversy surrounding the technology, namely how users will need to use Apple’s own 20W charger in order to get the 15W charging speeds. Tests have found that despite using more powerful chargers, it’s only the 20W model that gets users the 15W charging speeds.

This kind of limits its functionality as customers might not be very willing to shell out an extra $20 on a new charger. Either way, it’s something to take note of if you plan to buy the iPhone 12 mini which is expected to be launched later this month.
