Acer Hit With $50 Million Ransomware Attack

Ransomware attacks are unfortunately kind of common these days, and now it looks like Acer is one of the more recent victims of such an attack, and they could also possibly be one of the biggest ransomware attacks to date as the hackers have asked for a whopping $50 million in order to release the files.

According to the reports, Acer has been hit with the REvil ransomware attack where the hackers have stolen some files in the process. The attackers have published some documents on their website as proof that they have breached Acer’s systems, and are asking for $50 million if Acer wants their files back.

Acer has not acknowledged that they have been targeted by the attack, but in a statement made to BleepingComputer, the company said, “Acer routinely monitors its IT systems, and most cyberattacks are well defensed. Companies like us are constantly under attack, and we have reported recent abnormal situations observed to the relevant law enforcement and data protection authorities in multiple countries.”

If this hack sounds familiar, it is because not too long ago, The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077’s developer CD Projekt Red was also hit with a similar attack. However, the company refused to pay the ransom which resulted in the source code for some of their games being released into the wild.
