Framework Announces Two Modular Laptops At GDC 2023

The Framework brand has recently unveiled two exciting new modular laptops at GDC 2023 – Laptop 13 and Laptop 16. The Laptop 13 is available in two different configurations, featuring a 13th Gen Intel Core or an AMD Ryzen 7040 Series processor, with the latter being a first for the brand. It also boasts a higher-capacity battery, matte display, louder speakers, and more rigid hinges, making for an enhanced user experience.

Preorders for the Laptop 13 are now available in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, and Australia, with shipments starting in May. A batch preorder system is in place, with only a fully refundable $100/€100/£100 deposit required. The prebuilt configurations start at $1049 with Windows 11 preinstalled, while the Framework Laptop DIY Edition starts at $849 and allows for personalization in terms of memory, storage, operating system, Bezel color, and Keyboard.

Framework’s Laptop 13

In keeping with the product philosophy of designing for longevity, all of the upgraded modules are compatible with existing Framework Laptops. Preorders for mainboards with 13th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7040 Series processors are available now, with shipments beginning in May. Users can also sign up to be notified when the other new modules become available in the Framework Marketplace.

Higher performance with the Framework Laptop 16

The Framework Laptop 16 is a new high-performance laptop that carries forward the design philosophy of its predecessor, the Laptop 13, and offers repair and customization options. The new laptop also features two new module ecosystems: a fully reconfigurable input deck and modular, upgradeable graphics. The input system offers nearly unlimited options for customization, with hot-swappable input modules in three sizes: Small, Medium (Numpad Modules), and Large (Keyboard Modules).

The Expansion Bay system allows for modular graphics upgrades and a range of other non-graphiailable on GitHub for all three systems, and the company plans to open the Framework Marketplace to third-party module makers.

The Framework Laptop 16 is built to be customized to the needs of gamers, developers, heavy Linux users, creators, and others with performance-demanding work. The company will be sharing full specifications, pricing, and availability when they open preorders in spring 2023, ahead of shipments in late 2023.
