There are many out there who are more than content with listening to music on their smartphones using the default pair of headphones that are bundled with their devices. However there are some users out there who are more picky and might want better quality sound from their headphones.

These users might turn to portable headphone amps to get just that, but in case you’d rather not lug around a heavy amplifier that constantly needs its batteries changed, you’re in luck. A new project on Kickstarter has been launched for a headphone amplifier called AQUA. This is a lightweight headphone amp that according to its creators will not need any batteries to run.

This works thanks to the amp itself plugging directly into your smartphone via its Lightning port (for iOS devices) or micro USB (for everything else), so presumably it will draw some power from your handset so that’s worth taking note of. As for quality its creators claim, “The built-in high quality DAC supports 24bit/192kHz. Your great music can be heard and felt. Every single detail!”

We can’t attest to it ourselves since we haven’t tried it, but for $59 we suppose it won’t be too expensive for you to buy one and check it out yourselves. The AQUA Kickstarter project has since exceeded its original goal of $16,000 but if you’d like to get in on it, you still can by hitting up its Kickstarter page and pledging your support.
