microsoft-hololens-hands-on-01There are plenty of ways we can watch our TV shows, movies, or play our video games. This is traditionally done via a monitor or a TV, although in recent years we have seen technology introduced such as 3D displays, augmented reality, and virtual reality, but do any of them have what it takes to become the new standard?

While the jury might be out of virtual reality, Oculus seems to think that augmented reality doesn’t have what it takes at the moment. According to the company’s CEO Brendan Iribe in an interview with MCV, Iribe feels that augmented reality isn’t that compelling enough for customers to want more of it yet.

Iribe was quoted as saying, “The reaction from most people leaving AR demos is not: ‘I want to buy that as a soon as I can’, it’s: ‘I can see the potential of where it is going – one day’. That day has not come yet.” He adds that this is compared to the company’s Oculus Rift technology, which based on how its crowdfunding was received, has a mass-market appeal.

However Iribe adds that this could change in the future for augmented reality technology, but not now. In the meantime Microsoft seems to be betting on augmented reality, having announced the HoloLens earlier this year. That being said we suppose we will have to wait for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift to be released, which is pegged for next year, before we can see if virtual reality technology will succeed and become more mainstream.
