If recent Spotify job listings are anything to go on, the company might be expanding its business to go beyond just offering music streaming and could get into the hardware business through speaker systems. In fact it seems that there might have been some evidence of this happening as early as February this year.

According to a recently discovered thread on Reddit (via Digital Trends), several users claimed to have seen a popup message from Spotify upon opening the app with regards to a car player. This was accompanied by an image that you can see above, although from what we can tell this appears to be a rendering rather than an actual product photo.

The user who started the thread claimed that the popup was to advertise the device which apparently came with support for Amazon’s Alexa and also 4G connectivity, which would allow it to play music without the need to be tethered to a user’s smartphone. Spotify had previously replied to questions about the message claiming that it was a “test message”, but did not offer any additional details.

Like we said Spotify’s job listings have hinted that the company could expand into hardware, which actually makes sense since it would actually open up the door to more revenue streams. However when exactly we might be able to see these new hardware devices remains to be seen.
