1TB SSD to be as small as a postage stamp

Trust the Japanese to come up with ever smaller devices, thanks to the wonders of miniaturization. It seems as though a team of Japanese researchers are currently working on a new kind of technology which is able to shrink the size of SSDs more than 90% – turning them into extremely cheap stuff to manufacture while boosting energy efficiency by 70%. That would mean holding up to 1TB of information on an SSD that is as small as a postage stamp. The prototype that you see here is already at that size, albeit featuring 128 NAND flash memory chips and a sole controller chip. Data transfer rate is at 2Gbps, where a practical version is tipped to hit the market come this 2012 (that’s when the world ends anyways).
