Proposed Law Will Require Parental Consent for Online Tracking of Minors
We had reported of the FTC’s Do Not Track proposal yesterday, and now Massachusetts Rep. Edward Markey is taking Internet privacy step further by proposing legislation in 2011 that will make it a federal law for websites geared at children under 13 to obtain parental consent before being able to obtain personal information, such as the names and email addresses of youths. Markey says, “To ensure that kids are protected, I plan to introduce legislation next year that will include a ‘Do Not Track’ requirement so that kids do not have their online behavior tracked or their personal information collected or profiled.” Specific details of the proposed legislation are still being worked out at this time.
