RIBA-II: the upgraded robot nurse

RIBA-II

Remember the RIBA robot nurse that was introduced way back in 2009? The robotic hospital helper that was designed to aid people on and off their ward beds into wheelchairs is back. And this time around, it’s been upgraded. Called the RIBA-II, it now has the capability to lift patients off a futon at floor level – something the original RIBA couldn’t do.

The RIBA-II features joins in the robot’s base and lower back that enable to perform this physically strenuous task that most care-givers have trouble accomplishing. The RIBA-II is capable of ensuring patients get onto their beds or wheelchairs safely, thanks to some newly developed smart rubber sensors that allow the robot to detect a person’s weight from touch alone. Watch a video demonstration of the RIBA-II.
