Dolby enables 7.1 surround sound for streaming media

While we’ve had HD-quality streaming movies for some time now, the same couldn’t be said about the audio experience for folks with 7.1 surround sound systems. Well, we’ve got some good news for you. Dolby has just announced the first 7.1 surround sound experience over a streaming service. Partnering with VUDU, together they have enabled over 30 titles with 7.1 surround sound for streaming to your home theater system.

With more titles in the work, soon the days of having to purchase Blu-ray discs for the “best” audio visual experience are going to be over. Starting today, users can watch movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 7.1 surround sound over VUDU’s video on demand service. No word on when Dolby will be bringing the feature to other services but it shouldn’t be too far away.
