Fraunhofer robot can sketch people

Robot artistIf you want a sketch of you drawn by a robot arm, be sure to visit CeBIT in Hanover next month. The Frauhofer robot, which is normally used to analyze the optical reflection properties of various materials, will draw a portrait of anybody willing to sit still in a chair for about ten minutes. The robot uses a camera to study its subject, edge-processing software to seek out the contrasts in the image, and translates them into movements of the robot’s arm. The arm which holds a pencil turns draws the portrait on a piece of paper in front of it. A pretty cool combination of art, science and technology – unfortunately we won’t be seeing it on the streets anytime soon. The Frauhofer robot has more important things to do – like helping to design reflectors.
