Samsung now leads smartphone market in terms of unit shipments [Research]

It’s a number’s game for Apple and Samsung. According to a research conducted by Juniper Research, the South Korean conglomerate is now leading the smartphone market in terms of unit shipments, with 52.1 million smartphone shipments in Q2 this year. Juniper Research says that Samsung’s score is almost as twice as Apple’s 26 million smartphone shipments in the same quarter. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is definitely a huge contributing factor.

Just a few days ago, Samsung’s Shin Jong-kyun broke the news that the company has already sold over 10 million Samsung Galaxy S3s. But with Apple’s next-generation iPhone, dubbed as the iPhone 5, expected to arrive this year probably in September or October, the tables could turn in Apple’s favor. Juniper Research notes that the next iPhone will have to do more, considering its gold standard 3.5-inch display that is now dwarfed by Samsung’s high-end smartphones such as the Galaxy S3 with its 4.8-inch display and the purported Galaxy Note 2, rumored to sport a 5.5-inch display.
