WhatsApp Earns More Money From Google Play Than iOS In Select Markets

whatsapp-revenueIn a spanking new Distimo report where mobile app spending patterns are concerned, a fair number of interesting regional tidbits have emerged. On the global scale, Google Play maintains their steady chipping away at the gargantuan lead that Apple has where its integrated mobile app revenue generation is concerned. In fact, it was in April this year when the Google Play vs. iOS app revenue balance stood at 27% to 73%, where a year ago, the figures stood at 19% to 81%, respectively. Needless to say, Google Play still has a long way to go before a 50/50 split is achieved, but we have seen giants fall in the past such as Netscape.

Who knows how long it will take for Google Play to catch up? Well, interestingly enough in select mobile markets, Google has managed to catch up with Apple, especially where WhatsApp figures are concerned. In fact, the US market in April saw WhatsApp rack up $355,000 from Apple’s App Store, with Google Store garnering a mere pittance (relatively speaking) of $41,000 from Google Play. Good to know that the gap size in major European markets are so small, where WhatsApp picked up $290,000 in Germany alone from Google Play and $207,000 from the App Store. I would not read too much into this though, as Google still has their work cut out for them on a global scale.
