BlackBerry Voted As One Of The Top 100 Innovators Of 2013

BlackBerry-LogoWhile BlackBerry might be in financial trouble at the moment and are currently seeking for another company to buy them out and take them private, not everything is doom and gloom for the Canadian company as Thomson Reuters has recently listed BlackBerry as one of the Top 100 Global Innovators for 2013. The award is given to companies based on the number of patents that are applied for, and how frequently they are applied for, although there was no mention as to whether those patents needed to be made a reality for a company to be considered.

In any case according to the description, “This is the first year for BlackBerry on the Top 100 Innovators list, driven by a 38 percent surge in patent filings between 2010 and 2011, and 17 percent growth in patent filings between 2011 and 2012.  The rapid expansion of the company’s patent portfolio is certain to be a factor in BlackBerry’s recently-announced plans to pursue strategic alternatives, including a possible sale.” If anything we expect that this award could allow BlackBerry to ask for more money in their sale, whose patents we assume are primarily what potential buyers would be after. What do you guys think? Is BlackBerry deserving of being one of the top innovators of 2013?
